The Hardest Lesson I Ever Tried to Teach My Girls was Appreciation

The hardest lesson I ever tried to teach my girls was appreciation.

Honesty, respect, discipline. I could teach those.

Those have definitions. I can model those with ease.

Appreciation?

Adults still struggle with it.

Screaming “be grateful” at a kid doesn’t work.

It’s hard to miss what you’ve always had.

Appreciation lives in the gap.

The distance between having it and suddenly not.

That’s where it’s felt.

I just hope, over time, they felt it too.
