I wrote this poem in 2008 and sent it to myself. I discovered it on May 2nd, 2023. How appropriate given that my girls are grown and about to fly away.
How Swallowing My Ego Allowed Me to Raise Resilient Daughters
A Facebook friend messaged me and said, "I have never heard you speak poorly of their mother."
"You're quite astute," I replied. As a rule, I never speak badly about my ex-wife (or any ex).
I chose her.
My Ex Upgraded After Me
My ex-girlfriend upgraded after me. I'm sure all my exes upgraded.
At least, I hope they did. I hope they found the love and companionship that they were looking for and upgraded.
The haters are in the room (and so are your biggest fans)
One of the biggest lessons I am working to impart on the girls during the summer (because they are getting older and they are beginning to be confronted with it) is to always be aware that “haters”/critics and fans will always be in the room.
